...A STORM:
"A Storm" is Fuck Buddies' debut album. It was all made, from the packaging to the mastering, in between August and October 2004. Aside from the mastering, which was wonderfully done by Kokosnoot, I did everything myself. It is Dead Bees Records' first CDR release, limited to 100 numbered copies. the covers are all silkscreened and hand-sewn, there is an insert with lyrics and there is also something hidden inside.

Dénudée, intimiste, acoustique, la musique de Fuck Buddies n'a pas besoin d'apparat pour se dévoiler. Elle s'écoute, se chuchote, se frotte sans cesse à nos sens. On pense à tous ces artistes américains qui, par besoin et envie, avaient délaissé les formations rock classiques pour revenir à des valeurs plus naturelles. On pense bien évidemment à Will Oldham, Sentridoh ou Smog. On pense à des sentiments tissés dans une mélancolie exacerbée.

JAN03: Happy New Year! I was mugged on jan 3rd last year so i'll stay home tonight.
I will play with X-OR and Zapp Branigan on Jan 15th at the CHAMPAGNE (free, rue peyras) Maybe i'll bring along an electric guitar. On the 14th the charming Pierre Robert de Saint Vincent will play the piano on his own at la Mediathèque Associative (free, 8pm). Also, The Nova Express is my band and we're playing on Jan 8th at Un Autre Monde with Sleep Talker, Biff Tannen and Recife.

Intimiste c'est l'adjectif qui collera le mieux à ce disque. Chanté en sourdine pour ne pas réveiller les voisins ou la famille fuck buddies chante le mal vivre avec le courage des oiseaux sur une ou deux cordes suivant les soldes sur les jeux. Comptine perverse de Noël, elle réchauffe autant que les chants de cette période givrant les esprits faisant ressortir le noir sur contour plutôt que le blanc dans le cadre. Pensée triste ou ironique (last night i dreamt of amanda) face à autant d'aridité formelle on ne sait sur quel pied danser. Alors on ne danse pas on calque le pas sur celui de ben lee (i wanna be a whale ( harpoon version)) et on rentre dans une coquille de déveine, d'adolescence, de l'age ingrat mais l'age de la découverte et des expériences pour notre construction. PS : I had written a song for the DPA Records sampler and since the DPA boys take too much drugs and then sleep with old men in order to buy more drugs they forgot to put it on it, which is the highest possible offense ever. it's a weird/alternate version of a song that will be on the next record: star date (V version). Even though i hate them for not putting that song on their oh-so-cool sampler, they managed to save our crumbling friendship by putting the cover of Wham's "Last Christmas" Grib and I recorded as Dtomdom on it. FUCK BUDDIES’ debut album “A Storm” has just been released on Dead Bees Records. The melancholic voice behind Fuck Buddies is a handsome young man from the wild wild south west of France, but he could as well be ugly and from anywhere in the world, as it’s just a bunch of sad songs written on the edge of an empty bed. My references, as far as Indie Accoustic Guitar Bedroom Heroes are concerned, are limited to Beck’s “One foot in the Grave” & Ben Lee’s “Grandpaw Would” but I’m not here to have a debate on the genre, just to tell you that I was moved by this album. In 14 tracks + 1 japanese bonustrack, Fuck Buddies bluntly opens the doors of his innerself, he didn’t choose whether he’d like people to see him crying or naked, he just sings his soul; nude; with tears in his eyes. Honest, touching, brutal. Then, the artwork of the cd is minimalist but yet fits perfectly with the songs. Actually, it’s a cd-r, so there’s just my name written on it (personalized & numbered edition, yeah!) but the black sleeve, hand-sewed & silkscreened, is an ode to DIY in itself. The maritime imagery inspired cover can remind you of the Nova Express’ ep, but I guess it’s more related to track#7 “I Wanna Be a Whale”, the hit-single of the album.
As I’m kind of acquainted with Fuck Buddies, I asked him what his name meant. I thought at first, as it’s a solo project, it was because he was sick of his friends, but he told me that on the contrary, it was more an invitation to love the people close to you, to share your feelings with them, even sadness, as it’s through tough time that you realize who your real friends are. Now that I’m listening to it for a week, I understand it: this Storm of emotions is the perfect soundtrack for a friendly shag, to keep you & your buddies warm at night. Ideal for the season. NOV12: I'm a bit sad cause Xiu Xiu just left, i had a terrific time with them, their show was brilliant. They're very very nice people. I had a wonderful time.
We're going to do a two-days Christmas party on December 17/18th, on the 17th there will be a messy acoustic Christmas show at la mediatheque associative in Toulouse (rue de la bourse), with a bunch of people playing and fooling around with instruments. There will be: Fuck Buddies, Not-I Bird, Biff Tannen, X-OR, Sounds in the Olive Grove, Tourment d'Amour, CUT, F..., Dallas Vermouth and a drummer. And on the 18th we'll play records at the Champagne (rue peyras). Everything will be free and happy. In the meantime i'm going to try to record more songs and study a bit.
I really like that Berg Sans Nipple record i just got -"Life if (in four parts)" out on bizarrre k7- and i can't stop listening to the new Sage Francis record. Also, i can't wait to buy new sweaters and some gloves and see Antony play on Monday.NOV02: There's a show with my band (The Nova Express: www.thenovaexpress.net) on Saturday Nov 6th at l'école des Beaux Arts in Toulouse with Musclhard (musclhard.free.fr) and X-OR, it's free and it should be fun as hell. I'll have a couple of copies of "A Storm" for sale if you're interested. I can't stop listening to the new Low record.
OCT25: "A Storm" is done! Kokosnoot did a wonderful job mastering it and is now resting in Spain. I have started writing songs for the next record, which may not be as depressing as this one. I am also getting prepared for my show opening for the awesome Xiu Xiu (www.xiuxiu.org) on November 11th at VKS in Toulouse. I feel relieved and i can't stop listening to 80s pop.OCT19: Grapevine says "I Wanna Be a Whale" (the out-of-tune dead bees sampler demo version) was aired on Radio Campus in Paris, part of a Dead Bees special feature on the Plug & Play show. The P&P people also played songs by labelmates Sounds in the Olive Grove and Blitzen Trapper. You can listen to a recording of the broadcast by clicking here (real audio link courtesy of sdep.com). Also, X-Or came over, we recorded eight songs for his debut cdr. Aside from recording activities, i'm feeling really good and i can't stop listening to Iron and Wine. 24 covers left to sew.
OCT10: The record should be out before the end of the month. It will suit November very well. I can't stop listening to Castanets. 44 covers left to sew.
OCT01: not-I bird and Lady Ladybug came over to record a lovely song, it is called "Side Project" and it will be released at some point I guess. 70 covers left to sew.
SEP27: i have recorded a song with my friend CUT from the awesome Director's Cut (directorscut.free.fr) today. We're called The Beers and the song will hopefully grace the next dpa sampler: clickyclicky. 92 covers left to sew.
SEP01: Fuck Buddies' debut album is almost done! I have recorded the songs by myself during the summer with my trustworthy computer and a shitty microphone. I have also mastered the deadly art of silkscreening and silkscreened the covers, cut black cardboard paper and sewn it all together with soft black thread. It's titled "A Storm" and it will be out on Dead Bees Records (www.deadbees.com) sometime soon. Dead Bees' headmaster Kokosnoot is currently trying to make the tracks a bit less lo-fi.SHOWS:

There's a demo version of "I Wanna Be a Whale" on the Dead Bees Records 2004 Spring sampler. It was recorded with an out of tune guitar and i like it. There are loads of great bands on the sampler and you can either download it all and print your own cover or buy it for 2 euros on www.deadbees.com (click on "catalogue").here are also a couple of live tracks recorded at La Médiathèque Associative de Toulouse by my friend Jean with a md in the audience when I was invited to open for The Konki Duet (www.thekonkiduet.com), you can hear cars pass by as i play: last night i dreamt of amanda, liver.
